WHAT TO EXPECT?
Your eye examination will probably commence with History and Symptoms – a question and answer session, so that the optometrist can get to know about you and your eyes. This will include the main reasons for requesting the appointment, any past eye history for both yourself and your blood-relatives (eye conditions are often hereditary) and discussing your general health and medications (some eye conditions are health related). The optometrist will want to check any spectacles that you wear, so always bring these to your appointment. The optometrist will also want to know about your work and lifestyle, to get a clear understanding of your visual requirements.

SIGHT CONDITIONS
We strongly recommend our Premium examination which includes OCT scans, so that all aspects of your eye health can be examined in detail, screening for many conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, high blood pressure, diabetes and macular degeneration (dry or wet). We will take images of each eye and take the time to explain them to you, showing you the different areas on the pictures such as the optic nerve, the blood vessel system and the critical, central region of retina, known as the macula. The OCT scans the deeper layers of the eye and can pick up even early signs of eye conditions such as Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma. The computer software can then compare these images when you next have a scan, picking up any changes that may be important.

DRY EYE CONDITIONS
A normal tear film is made up of three layers:
-
a mucus layer (closest to the eye) helps tears stick to the eye
-
a watery layer – keeps the eye oxygenated and hydrated
-
an oily layer (on the surface) stops the tears evaporating
If any of these three layers are not perfect, symptoms of dry eye can be caused such as grittiness, stinging, red eye and even excessive tearing/watering.
There are many causes of dry eye, including:
-
increasing age,
-
some medication,
-
air conditioning,
-
eyelid disorders such as meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis (see below), and
-
inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
CORPORATE EYECARE
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work’s Directive on Display Screen Equipment makes it compulsory that employees working on VDUs have an eye exam before commencing work and at regular intervals thereafter.
We have relationships with many companies to offer VDU eye examinations for employees. Our Optometrists carry out full eye health checks as well as a vision assessment for VDU use and our Dispensing Opticians can advise on the best spectacles for each individual’s needs.
Any company interested in arranging an eye care scheme for their employees is welcome to contact their nearest Prince & Collisons Optician to discuss this in more detail.
